The year is 2170 and a group of Stage 5 students at Mayfair Academy discover a time capsule buried in the school garden. The date on the front is the 8th of June 2020.
Freddy – Stage 5. June 2020
It was a beautiful day, so Callum and Leo decided to explore the old ruins that used to be Mayfair Academy, 150 years ago. Leo and Callum were both 10 years old, they were in Stage 5. Leo was the brainy one and Callum was the tough one.
As they explored, something caught Leo’s eye. “Check this out Callum, an old European coin!”
“Wow! That must be hundreds of years old!” replied Callum.
As they examined the map on the coin, they heard a rock move. They scrambled to get away but Leo caught his foot on some weeds and the rock just missed him. As Callum cut him free with his red pen knife, he noticed a green, shiny object sticking out the ground. They dug down, and pulled out an object that had ‘Repsol’ on it. They shook it and heard something hard inside it.
“Let’s take it to Grandpa, he knows all about old stuff!” giggled Callum.
As they walked up Grandpa’s path, he waved to them, then said “Where on earth did you find that old oil can?”
“What’s an oil can?” asked Callum.
“It’s what factories, cars and most machinery ran off. Fossil fuels, that’s what caused the smog, but now everything is battery run. It’s much better now!”
Callum passed it to Grandpa, explaining where they found it.
Grandpa opened it and tipped a small black object out, along with disintegrated pieces of paper. Grandpa looked up smiling. “I think you’ve found a time capsule from the kids that used to go to Mayfair Academy!”
“But what is it, is that oil?” asked Callum
“I know what that is, it’s a memory thingy” said Leo.
Laughing, Grandpa corrected him, “Well done Leo, yes, a memory stick. And I have just the thing for it!”
Grandpa left and came back with a huge keyboard thing. The boys looked confused. Is this what they used instead of the Verchysearchy? Leo pulled out his small pen-sized Verchysearchy from his pocket and looked at it. They used these for everything. Contacting people, paying for things, ordering things, getting information. But how could the keyboard thingy fit in a pocket, Leo thought.
As the screen flickered to life, they saw the words MAYFAIR ACADEMY TIME CAPSULE 8TH JUNE 2020. There were copies of newspapers. One said ‘4 days, no Coronavirus deaths!!’ Another about plastic pollution and another about a man called George Floyd. There was a book called the Beast of Buckingham Palace and a song called Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi.
Grandpa got juice and biscuits and explained how in 2020 the Coronavirus, Covid-19, killed millions. How civil war broke out over the death of George Floyd but then the people all laid down their guns and the world banned weapons. Then the scientists and leaders started thinking, we’ve helped ourselves let’s help the world. With no war in the world and no oil to fight over, new fantastic inventions came. First the cure for Covid-19. Then the Plastosucker, which removed all plastics and saved the world. More and more inventions were made and that’s why the year of ‘New Normality’, the year 2020, was such an important time. We would not be here if those changes had not been made!
The boys stood up, hugged Grandpa goodbye. Leo gave Grandpa the coin he found. “Where are you boys off to now?” asked Grandpa.
“To make our own time capsule of course!”
